Today at lunch we had singing practice in the library to rehearse for Tio Orlando’s despedida tomorrow. At the despedida each section of NPH will be doing SOMETHING (performing a play, singing, dancing, giving a presentation, etc) to show Orlando what all of his years here at NPH have meant to all of us. The school has decided to sing two songs – one that was created by our new music teacher, Oscar, called “Mil Palabras” and the other entitled “Un Millon de Amigos”. Today we had practice at 1 pm. Molly, Thayer, and I of course showed up at 1 pm en punto…while everyone else was characteristically tardy…but only by about 15 minutes – a new Guatemalan record! Our singing practice was rolling by 1:20 and well, sadly, and I have to quote Thayer on this one “I think that was one of the most organized meetings I’ve been to here so far.”
It’s true. School meetings? Last for an hour and a half and nothing of importance gets said. Volunteer meetings? Last about two and a half hours and well, nothing gets said. English Department meetings are about an hour and…well…you get the idea… But this meeting. WOW. Our practice lasted 45 minutes and in that time we: organized a standing alignment, reviewed new words for our 2 songs, and practiced each song about 4-5 times. I think this is one of the first times that I will be part of a group presenting something to the entire NPH community and NOT feel completely embarrassed/unprepared! Hooray :) Here’s hoping tomorrow goes off without a hitch!
