Eight years ago my biology teacher at my high school was diagnosed with ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was the second teacher in our school district to be diagnosed. Instead of backing down and admitting defeat, many of my close friends decided to fight back. They began a fundraising event called “Hoops for ALS” – a 3-on-3 basketball tournament that raised $32,000 in its first year.
The next year, that basketball tournament turned into the phenomenon that became “A Midwinter Night’s Dream” – a magical event meant to raise awareness and funds for ALS. Held at Oheka Castle on Long Island, AMND has made a huge impact on ALS research.
In its 7th year, AMND has made leaps and bounds from its small beginnings on the basketball court. This year, with the help of a fantastic team of current students from Northport High School, the event helped to raise over $516,000, pushing them over the 2 million dollar mark since the organization’s inception. I’m so happy that I got to be a part of A Midwinter Night’s Dream this year – congratulations to everyone involved :).
